Low back pain: build strength with confidence

Connected care from BJC Health: back pain care backed by a specialist rheumatology practice.

Most back pain is mechanical, but sometimes it isn't. As a rheumatology-integrated practice, we're positioned to recognise the difference and build a program around what's actually going on, combining Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology tailored to your assessment.

lower back bullet  WHAT THIS PROGRAM TARGETS

Four areas of focus

From early milestones to complex conditions, Blanche supports children and teens across many areas.

Pain Reduction LB

Pain Reduction

Exercise-based care is the internationally recommended first-line approach to managing chronic back pain, ahead of imaging, medication or surgery.

Mobility & Movement LB

Mobility & Movement

Improving how your back moves day to day. Current guidelines have moved away from posture correction as a fix, staying active does more than sitting or standing 'correctly.'

Confidence in Movement LB

Confidence in Movement

Building lasting trust in your back's ability to handle daily life.

Building Strength & Fitness LB

Building Strength & Fitness

Progressive, graded exercise to build overall strength and fitness, current evidence shows this matters more than isolating specific muscles.

lower back bullet  WHAT TO EXPECT

lower back bullet  GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Do I need a referral to start?

Most people join this program on referral from their GP or specialist, but you're also welcome to self-refer directly. Either way, we'll help you book the right first appointment.

Is upfront payment required?

Yes. Paying upfront supports consistency across the six weeks, giving your care team the opportunity to build on each session and track your progress over time.

Can I use a care plan for this program?

Your GP determines your eligibility for a Chronic Disease Management Plan (CDMP). If eligible, a CDMP can apply to your Initial Assessment and any one-on-one sessions, whichever program option you're in. Group exercise sessions are not covered by Medicare. Eligible patients can access up to 5 allied health sessions under Medicare per calendar year, shared across all allied health services used.

Can I pause the program?

With adequate notice, you can pause the program for absences of 7 days or more. We understand life happens, and we'll approach any special circumstances with understanding.

Will exercise make my back pain worse?

No, when it's tailored to you. Your Initial Assessment determines the safest and most effective path for your back, and your program is adjusted throughout as you progress.

Could my back pain be something more?

If your back pain came on gradually, is worse in the morning, or improves with movement rather than rest, it could be inflammatory rather than mechanical. Visit spondyloarthritis.au for a plain-English guide and a two-minute self-check, or speak with us directly.

Which program option is right for me?

Your Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist will recommend the right option for you after your Initial Assessment, based on your goals and needs.

How is success measured?

We'll track your progress using outcome measures and movement patterns identified at your Initial Assessment, reassessed at your final Program Review.

What if the program isn't suitable for me?

If the program isn't the right fit, we'll discuss alternative options with you and your treating doctor or specialist.
